A Love Letter on the Floorboard: Returning to God’s Word

Updated: Oct 2

Recently, a friend shared her heart about reading the Bible. She said that her Bible, once so pretty and perfect, stacked on her nightstand, was now worn, tattered and at that very moment, laying in the floorboard of her car. Don’t you know God’s heart smiles at the tattered pages and now battered cover of her Bible?

For many years, she had procrastinated in reading it daily. But, thankfully, not anymore.

She went on to remind us that the Bible is how God literally speaks to each of us. His words bringing specific meaning and understanding and often differently than before depending on what we need and when we read. And, after several years of intentionally reading, she wants to read more and more. Every day it has now become so much more than simply a good habit, it has become a great joy in her life.

Today, we simply must be in God’s word constantly. We must hold it as the one true standard of what is right because all around us the world is claiming there is no true ‘right’. Everything is based more on human feelings and our individual wants, needs and desires than the Truth of God’s word. All around us the flesh is ruling. To know the truth and live it, we simply must spend time with God.

As we talked more and my friend shared, we came to the realization that perhaps it is hard to get in this daily habit because the enemy causes us to believe his lies. We won’t understand it, its boring or some other spiritual resource is just as good are just a few. The last thing he wants is for us to spend time in God’s Word because it says when we do, we will be forever transformed into His likeness. Talk about a threat to satan’s agenda!

Let’s be honest, for most of us, sitting down and reading the actual Bible can be a challenge. It’s much easier to read a quick devotional or inspirational book, both of which are great options; however, are still not the actual Word of God.

Really, can there be another book more powerful than the one containing actual words of our Lord? Start small if you struggle (I once did too!) and pray for God to make the words clear and meaningful. Ask for an open heart and undistracted mind. And be patient. God will work in and through your simple ‘yes’ as you open the pages!

God longs to speak to your heart so you can really know Him.

His Words a very lifeline in which your life becomes anchored and secure; standing firm forever.

Penned long ago with you in mind, sweet friend.

He is calling you by name.

With His gift of grace in every word.

Beckoning you to hear Him and linger a while.

Rest in His Presence and cling to His every promise.

His Word a lamp to your feet and a light to your path.

Brightening up your days as His Word illuminates life and Truth. There really is no sweeter gift than His Word.

Written from His very heart to you.

A beautiful, timeless love letter.
